Maestro Carl Topilow has been catching up with several friends of the Cleveland Pops Orchestra in a new series called “Conversations with Carl.” In this segment, he talked with “Mr. Cavalier,” Austin Carr. Known for many years as the television voice of the Cleveland Cavaliers, he has made multiple appearances as guest narrator with the Cleveland Pops Orchestra.
From his father instilling the importance of education and his admiration of Dave Bing and Kevin Johnson, former NBA players who followed careers in politics as mayors of Detroit and Sacramento respectively, Austin shares his personal story with Carl:

Black History Month may have ended in February but Carl Topilow and the Cleveland Pops Orchestra are still honoring the contributions of the many African American composers and artists who have shaped music and the world.
The incredibly talented jazz trumpeter, vocalist and entertainer, Byron Stripling, has graced the stage at Severance Hall many times with the Cleveland Pops Orchestra. In this conversation, Byron shares how music was woven into the Civil Rights movement and the impact it had on the spirits of those protesting. He also talks about his early life with his father as a choir director and moving from the south to the north for a better way of life.
