In honor of Black History Month, we dedicate this series of interviews to the talented African American composers who added so much to American culture and the gifted African American artists whose artistry has graced stages throughout the country and indeed the world.
Maestro Carl Topilow had a chance to catch up with vocalist Capathia Jenkins, whose performances with the Cleveland Pops dazzled our audience with her amazing vocal prowess and effervescent personality. The discussion included the early stages of her career, the many influences of African American vocalists, such as Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan, and stories of some memorable performances.

While we’ve had to keep our distance throughout this pandemic, technology has allowed us to stay in touch with those who matter most to us.
Maestro Carl Topilow has used this time to catch up and chat with several friends of the Cleveland Pops Orchestra in a new series called “Conversations with Carl.”
To kick off this series, our Maestro talked with vocalist and longtime friend of the Cleveland Pops Orchestra, Evelyn Wright. Evelyn shares where her love of music began and stories of her own encounters with racism as she traveled and performed. Following her interview is a special performance of “Let’s Fall in Love” from the Cleveland Pops Jazz Ensemble.
